NAPDUK was formed in 2007 by a group of prison dentists.  Until that time there was no organisation that addressed the specialist nature of prison dentistry.

The association is set up with the entire dental team in mind and has the following aims:

         ●   To provide information, support and advice to prison dental professionals

         ●   To provide a forum for exchange of ideas

         ●   To provide a forum for continuing education and training

         ●   To bring professionals together to share best practice

NAPDUK offers insights and expertise on the special requirements of prison dentistry to a number of organisations.  The association was involved with the development of the guidelines for Dentists with Special Interests in Prison Dentistry (DwSI), the Dentistry in Prisons Handbook and worked with the Department of Health on improving dental access, quality and oral health in prisons and detention centres.  The organisation is also represented on a number of other bodies including the secure environments group of the RCGP.

NAPDUK holds its annual conference on the first Friday in February.  The Annual General Meeting is held in conjunction with the conference.  The next conference is scheduled for Friday, 3 February 2012.

As an additional forum to the conference, NAPDUK sponsors networking and study groups throughout the year in the following regions:

         ●   North of England

         ●   The Midlands

         ●   London

         ●   South of England

The NAPDUK constitution was voted on and ratified at the annual general meeting of the members in 2009.  The association was granted UK charity status.  The executive committee of the association meets four to five times a year to discuss current issues.  The minutes of the most recent meeting are published on this website.
